Resource management for scientific applications in highly elastic cloud infrastructures

Recent advances in highly elastic cloud computing technologies dramatically change the way people and researchers access and use computing infrastructures. Such highly elastic infrastructures, including serverless architectures or lightweight containers, can be dynamically adapted and adjusted to the changing demands of the applications, with an unprecedented fine level of granularity, in which computing resource consumption can be requested, measured and billed with a minute, second or even millisecond accuracy, as in the case of such services as AWS Lambda or Google Cloud Functions, and also with the emerging lightweight container technologies such as Docker. This leads to new challenges in resource management for distributed applications, making the traditional approaches based on job scheduling inadequate, while the impact on performance and cost of applications in this model has not yet been understood by research community.

For these reasons, the main objective of the project will be to develop models, recommendations, and new algorithms of resource management for scientific applications such as large-scale workflows in the highly-elastic cloud infrastructures, supported by experimental evaluation of  performance and cost of running applications in this model.

Algorithmic and Axiomatic Analysis of Committee Scoring Rules

Committee scoring rules are a recently introduced formalism for describing multiwinner voting rules (i.e., rules for elections where we elect a group of winners, referred to as a committee). In this project our goal is to evaluate their axiomatic properties (both properties satisfied by all committee scoring rules and properties satisfied by natural subfamilies of them) and to find effective means of computing their winners (it appears that almost all of them are NP-hard, but we seek good approximation and FPT algorithms, as well as practical heuristics).

Multiwinner elections have a number of applications, ranging from electing parliaments, through various business decisions (such as, e.g., choosing what products to put on an Internet store's homepage), to shortlisting tasks. Each of these applications requires rules with different features and this is why we aim to evaluate axiomatic properties of committee scoring rules. Practical application of committee scoring rules requires effective methods of computing them, and this is why we seek algorithmic results.

Monitoring and forecasting of levees

The aim of the ISMOP project is to conduct studies on a comprehensive system for monitoring and forecasting of levees, which includes: massive collection of measurement data on a continuous basis, their optimized transmission, their interpretation and analysis using computer simulation providing visualized results for the relevant authorities.Innovation research involves comparing the simulation results of the shafts of their actual physical model. This will be achieved through the construction of an experimental portion of the shaft in the floodplain of the Vistula, and then the implementation of selected scenarios destructive. http://www.ismop.edu.pl/
